Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Interesting info about MLK:
- MLK and his father were both born with the first name Michael, but his father later changed each of their first names to Martin in honor of the German Protestant leader Martin Luther.Â
- More than a quarter million people of diverse ethnicities attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963 when MLK gave his “I Have A Dream†speech. At the time, it was the largest gathering of protesters in Washington’s history.
- MLK sang with his church choir at the 1939 Atlanta premiere of the movie Gone with the Wind.
- One of the people most often cited as an influence of MLK was Bayard Rustin. But in 1955, Bayard had been arrested in offense for having consensual sex with two other men. To King’s credit, he did not distance himself from the activist in spite of his potentially damaging reputation.
- MLK was a fan of the original Star Trek television series.
- MLK is the influence behind U2’s song “Pride (In the Name of Love)”.
